Float Researcher, Tom Fine

Thomas Fine is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toledo and has been working on getting floating at the school for research but also for work with patients. He reflects on his float research that began in 1978 with one Samadhi tank in his behavioral medicine department and how the release of Altered States in 1980 impacted public perception. He also shares what he calls the worst saltwater story of all time! Thom then talks about stress, how our brain changes in response to dealing with stress over time, and their early findings about the float tank’s efficacy in reducing one’s level of cortisol and, as they theorized, allowing the system to work more efficiently. He shares why he’s not shocked by the industry’s growth in this age of hyper-communication and sensory input and what he hopes to see from float research in the future. Amy and the Float Nashville team got through the rebuild of their open float tank despite the project taking longer than expected and a leak of which was difficult to find the source. The week ended on a high note, though, celebrating a milestone with another float center.

Dylan shares some challenging hurdles he’s been tackling within himself over the past week. He reflects on how hopping into a tank, something he hasn’t had much time for since the arrival of his baby, helped to center him. Amy offers support on how these times of struggle and questioning lead to growth.   [caption id="attachment_1881" align="aligncenter" width="223"] Mark mixing salt as fast as he can...
